Over the past 45 years, Joe Hunt has participated in many aspects of the business of real estate appraisal, and as a result of his experience, he has contributed to the body of knowledge that makes up real estate appraisal. Beginning with his early days as a mass appraiser for Davidson County in Tennessee, then, later, Director of Assessments for Alexandria, Virginia, and after that, a private practice real estate appraiser specializing in large commercial properties, all the while teaching appraisal courses for the International Association of Assessing Officers, Joe was preparing for the job he developed at the University of North Carolina School of Government. From 1983 until 2009, Joe worked at UNC as a Lecturer in Public Finance and Government where he provided consultation and education to the 100 NC county assessment offices. His classes on various aspects of real estate appraisal were attended not only by NC appraisers but by a following of appraisers from all over the USA. During his time at UNC, Joe also worked as a consultant (the Joseph E. Hunt Company) to various municipalities outside North Carolina.

John Smith, CAE

John Smith graduated from North Carolina State University in 1980, with a degree in Political Science. His computer assisted mass appraisal experience began with L. Robert Kimball and Associates working in Dare County, NC. His appraisal experience includes working with Byer and Bodenheimer Appraisal Services, and Pearson Appraisal Services. In 1985 Mr. Smith became the Chief Appraiser for Orange County, North Carolina until he was appointed as the Assessor in 1996. He held this appointment until his retirement in 2009. Between 1985 and 2009, Mr. Smith oversaw all aspects of six successful Orange County revaluations. Mr. Smith holds the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) highest designation of CAE, has been published by IAAO, and has been involved as presenter in several IAAO conferences.
